WATCH: ‘Real or Fake’ Workshop as Part of Digital Youth Month

Montreal's Digital Youth Month is back again this February, and we're thrilled to have been invited to participate! The event is put on by Printemps Numérique, a non-profit organization, like Hands On Media Education, that teaches digital literacy through activities and resources for youth, teachers, professionals and the general public.

This year’s Digital Youth Month theme is “transparency”, which is perfectly in-line with the new online challenges we all face. That’s why we’ve decided to offer a free workshop for Quebec students called “Real or Fake: Learning How Media is Made by Making Our Own”.

In this challenging time of school closures and virtual education, students, parents, and teachers need media and digital literacy skills more than ever. The COVID-19 pandemic has seen an exponential increase in online use, misinformation and polarization. It is critical for people of all ages to understand how media is made, to develop a critical eye when consuming any news or information, and be able to identify whether information is real or fake.

In this 1-hour hands-on and interactive media literacy workshop, students across Quebec aged 8-12 will learn:

  • Why online information verification is so important,

  • How difficult it sometimes is to spot the difference between real or fake stories, and

  • How to make their own news using a free and fun online tool.

The workshop will conclude with a group discussion and presentation of their awesome new creations.

Teachers will learn helpful online information verification tips which will help them successfully guide their students in their online research for future projects.

Parents will learn alongside their child for their own critical thinking and digital citizenship skills as a digital and connected parent.

Best of all, this online workshop is FREE, watch it below.

This marks the beginning of HOME’s monthly free webinar series that will cover different themes and topics related to media and digital literacy. As always, our approach is fun, hands-on and interactive so make sure you follow along to find out when our next webinar will be, and on what topic! Hope to see you there!
